Lead what’s next at AE

Leadership is broader than managing people.

You’ve reached a point where solving the problem yourself isn’t always the biggest contribution you can make.

Maybe you want to set direction in your field. Coach others. Build stronger client relationships. Develop new propositions. Bring people together around an idea. Or help clients make better decisions when there is no obvious answer.

Maybe it’s a combination.

At AE, leadership does not automatically mean becoming a people manager. It means using your experience where it can create the most value.  It means helping decide which problems matter, challenging choices when there is a better way and making your expertise work beyond your own assignment.

Lead through expertise · people · clients and business · community · thought leadership

Growth · Impact · People

Make your experience valuable beyond your own work.

At this stage, Impact and People come further to the foreground. Your experience can help shape stronger decisions, strengthen other professionals and build expertise, ideas and relationships that reach beyond one assignment.

Growth remains part of it too. It becomes less about collecting the next skill or title and more about expanding your perspective, influence and the ways you can use what you already know.

What can you expect

Let your experience reach further.

At this stage, your contribution is about more than what you can deliver yourself. It is also about the decisions you help improve, the expertise you help build and the people you make stronger.

Shape complex outcomes

Experience gives you more context to see beyond the immediate question.

You can help frame complex problems, bring different perspectives together and guide decisions where there is no standard answer.

Depending on your role, that can mean helping clients make strategic digital choices, connecting business and technology, steering complex programmes or challenging an approach when you believe there is a better one.

Your expertise is not only there to get the work done. It should help make better choices about what gets done in the first place.

Build beyond your own work

What you know can create value far beyond the assignment you are working on today.

You might coach colleagues, build an expertise area, develop a new approach, contribute to a proposition, strengthen a client relationship or share your thinking through talks, training and thought leadership.

You do not have to do all of those things.

The broader contribution should fit your expertise, ambitions, role and client context. What matters is that your experience can help build something that lasts beyond your own deliverables.

Help shape AE’s direction

The more experience and context you build, the more you can contribute beyond your immediate role.

Through moments such as Leadership Days and Leadership Calls, you can get visibility into important developments and choices across AE and bring your own experience into those conversations.

That can mean raising opportunities or challenges you see in the market, sharing what you learn from clients or contributing to initiatives that reach across business units and expertise areas.

The aim is not simply to hear where AE is going. It is to create opportunities for experienced voices to help influence that direction.

Strong peers, not more hierarchy

Greater autonomy should not mean greater isolation.

You should still have people around you who challenge your thinking, question your assumptions and bring expertise or context you do not have yourself.

Through business units, expertise communities, account teams, leadership forums and informal peer relationships, you can test difficult choices with people working on different problems, in different domains and at different clients.

You may often be the person others come to for perspective. You should still have people you can go to for yours.

AI and leadership

Help decide where AI actually adds value.

At this stage, AI is about more than individual productivity. It can change client strategy, technology choices, operating models, processes, roles and the expertise organisations need. Your role is to help make those choices deliberately.
Separate useful applications from hype. Connect technological possibilities to business value. Make risks and long term consequences visible. Help teams and clients adapt when the work itself changes.
You do not need to know every new tool first. You do need enough expertise and perspective to help decide what matters.
Growth remains part of it too. It becomes less about collecting the next skill or title and more about expanding your perspective, influence and the ways you can use what you already know.

FAQ

Questions you might have

Do I need to become a people manager to keep progressing?

No. Leadership at AE can take different forms. You can lead through deep expertise, coaching and developing people, client and business relationships, community building or thought leadership. Those paths can overlap, but they do not have to. Someone who wants to deepen their expertise does not automatically have to become a people manager. And someone who enjoys coaching others does not necessarily have to take on the same commercial responsibilities. The question is where your experience can create the most value.

What does leadership look like at AE?

There is no single leadership role everyone is expected to grow into. You might help set direction in an expertise area, guide complex client decisions, coach colleagues, build a community, develop new propositions or strengthen long term client relationships. Leadership is less about having a particular title and more about where your expertise, judgement and actions help others move forward.

Can my contribution go beyond my client assignment?

Yes. As your experience grows, there are more ways to use it beyond one project. You can contribute to knowledge communities, coaching, internal learning, account development, propositions, thought leadership, business opportunities or internal initiatives. How much you combine those activities with client work depends on your role, ambitions and client context. There is no expectation that everyone takes on the same mix.

How much influence can I have on AE itself?

There are opportunities to contribute beyond your own business unit or assignment. Leadership Days and Leadership Calls give experienced professionals visibility into broader developments and strategic choices within AE. They also create space to bring perspectives from your expertise, client work and part of the organisation into the conversation. You can also contribute through expertise communities, propositions and initiatives that help develop how AE works or what we bring to clients. That does not mean every strategic decision is made collectively. It does mean experience from across AE can help inform where the organisation goes.

Will I still have people around me who challenge me?

That is an important part of the experience we want to create. As your expertise grows, it becomes increasingly valuable to have peers around you who bring another client context, another discipline or deeper knowledge of a particular problem. You can connect with those people through business units, expertise communities, account teams, leadership forums and informal relationships across AE. The aim is not for you to always be the most experienced person in the room.

Does coaching still make sense when I have a lot of experience?

More experience means more autonomy. It does not mean you have to work everything out alone. Your Long Term Coach can still be a sounding board for questions about your future direction, different responsibilities, another client context, your network or the balance between client work and broader contributions. As your experience grows, the form of support changes too. What you need from it may also change. For some people, one strong sounding board is enough. Others value different perspectives depending on the decision they are facing.

Can I combine client work with coaching, thought leadership or internal initiatives?

Yes, although the exact balance depends on your role and context. Your main contribution may still sit with a client, while part of your expertise also goes into coaching colleagues, developing a proposition, sharing knowledge or helping build an expertise area. There is no fixed model in which everyone has to divide their time in the same way. The aim is to use your experience where it creates the most relevant value.

How can I contribute to thought leadership?

Thought leadership can take different forms. You might develop a new perspective or approach, contribute to a proposition, speak at an event, share expertise through training or communities, or help make what AE learns across client contexts visible to others. It does not require having an opinion on everything. It is about having something useful to add where you have the expertise and experience to do so.

How does AI change what is expected from me?

At this stage, AI is less about mastering every new tool and more about understanding what the technology changes. That can mean recognising where AI creates real value, separating useful possibilities from hype, connecting technology to strategy, making risks and governance visible or helping teams develop new ways of working. Your existing expertise remains important because it gives you the context to judge whether something is actually a good idea.

Do all experienced professionals follow the same path?

No. One person may want to deepen their expertise and become a stronger authority in their field. Another may want to coach others, build stronger client relationships, develop propositions or contribute more broadly within AE. Those directions can also change over time. There is no standard combination of client work, coaching, thought leadership, people leadership and business development that everyone eventually has to follow.

Where will I work?

That depends on your role and client assignment. AE has offices in Leuven, Antwerp, Ghent and Hasselt, and many of our clients are based in Brussels. For most consultancy roles, client presence is part of the job. In practice, that usually means two to three days a week on site, with flexibility around travel time, not a daily commute. We discuss location and mobility early in the recruitment process, so you know what a role involves before you decide.

Where could your experience make a difference?

Explore roles for professionals who want their expertise to influence more than their own deliverables. The role matters. But so does the room around it. The decisions you can influence, the expertise you can help build and the people you will work alongside.
